What's the new Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The new £450 million Boiler Upgrade Scheme, (BUS), will replace the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive. It will be available to both domestic and small nondomestic properties throughout England and Wales.

The Boiler Upgrade Programme is available to homeowners, small landlords, and private landlords. A valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), and no outstanding recommendations are required to apply.

Low carbon heating systems will be supported by financial assistance for those who are eligible. This includes heat pumps, biomass boilers and ground source heat pumps. For the purchase of air source heat pump and biomass boilers and for ground source heat pump grants, £5,000 will be available. The Boiler Upgrade Programme will grant grants for three years.

The UK government has made the Boiler Upgrade Programme a crucial step in its plan to decarbonise. Heating is responsible for nearly 25% of UK carbon emissions. The government has established targets to make all new heating systems in the UK carbon-neutral by 2035. A new grant program has been launched by the government to encourage low-carbon heating systems.

The UK government also announced zero VAT for energy-efficient measures from April 2022.

The government intends to install 600,000 heat pumps each year. Experts aren't sure if the budget of the government will be sufficient to reach this goal.

What do you need to know?

Installers will be able to open accounts with Ofgem, scheme administrator, from 11 April 2022. The scheme will be open for grant applications, and payments, from 23 May 2022.

The grant will be applied for by you on behalf of your customer. After you have received the voucher, you'll have three months to install an air-source heat pump or biomass boiler. You'll have six months to do so for a ground-source heat pump. Once the installation is complete, you can redeem your voucher.
